International Storytelling Festival Amsterdam - 1 to 5 November
Kicking off the month is the International Storytelling Festival Amsterdam, which runs from 1 to 5 November. This year, the festival centres around the theme of Liberation. Storytellers, musicians and troubadours from around the world will converge at Podium Mozaïek to share their unique perspectives on this profound subject. Expect thought-provoking shows, inspiring workshops, meaningful talks and plenty of music to keep you grooving. Take a moment to contemplate life, liberation and what it means to you while enjoying a glass of wine or a cup of tea on one of the oriental carpets.
Sinterklaas Arrives - 18 November
Mid-November marks the arrival of Sinterklaas in Amsterdam, a cherished Dutch tradition loved by both children and adults. Sinterklaas, similar in appearance to Father Christmas or Santa Claus, travels from Spain to the Netherlands, bearing gifts and special treats for the little ones. His arrival is celebrated with a colourful parade through the city, featuring boat and horse processions. Children eagerly line the streets, waving at Sinterklaas and his companions, as traditional sweets rain down upon them. The Sinterklaas festivities continue daily until the grand celebration on 5 December.
International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) - 8 to 19 November
For documentary film enthusiasts, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is a cinematic paradise. Held annually in November, IDFA is the world's largest documentary festival, boasting over 300 films that offer captivating glimpses into life around the globe. The festival features lectures, workshops and outdoor screenings under the night sky, transforming Amsterdam into a hub for documentary lovers. With its diverse selection of international documentaries, IDFA presents a global perspective, taking viewers to various corners of the world through powerful and often revealing stories. Many screenings are in English or come with English subtitles.
