Dr Gabor Molnar and Co-authors Assess Use of Algorithm Factory for Video Delivery Operations

In today's world of binge-watching and endless streaming options, ensuring viewers have a top-notch experience is crucial for video service providers. It is no longer just about Quality of Service (QoS); it is about delivering that ‘wow’ factor that keeps viewers coming back for more.

When Pay TV service providers prioritise Quality of Experience (QoE), they can offer subscribers a more personalised viewing journey. This shift requires a smarter approach to video content delivery and the adoption of new tools and technologies to enhance the viewing experience.

Introducing the Algorithm Factory for Video Delivery Operations

In April 2024, Associate Professor of Applied Sciences at Wittenborg, Gabor Molnar, alongside co-authors Luís Ferreira PiresOscar de Boer and Vera Kovaleva, published a paper to showcase the use of an algorithm factory for video delivery operations. This ‘high-tech hub’ is where experts refine algorithms to optimise video delivery.

Published by the open science platform Frontiers, the paper describes how an algorithm factory assures high QoE for video streaming services by refining numerous algorithms.

Empirical Assessment

The researchers conducted an empirical study using data from Divitel, a Netherlands-based professional services company, analysing a dataset from 2016 to 2022. This dataset included technical, operational and customer satisfaction data from a European Pay TV service provider.

The study used data on the number of technical problems, problem resolution speed, number of changes and implementation lead times. It also conducted a correlational analysis between productivity measures and subscriber satisfaction indicators.

Key Findings

The researchers found that implementing an algorithm factory significantly improved the Pay TV service provider's performance. Using the algorithm factory, engineers could resolve critical issues five times faster and reduce incident tickets by 59%, making the service more dependable and stable.

Molnar emphasises that a data-driven approach enhances decision-making, reduces human errors and increases overall efficiency and reliability. Proactively addressing end-user-impacting issues improves the viewer's quality of experience while saving costs.

Aligning with Sustainability Goals

Furthermore, Molnar highlights how a data-driven approach aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12, optimising resource use and reducing unnecessary actions like field service visits to customers’ homes. This efficiency conserves energy and minimises the environmental impact of video content consumption.

Looking Ahead

"The insights from this research are expected to benefit both traditional and over-the-top (OTT) video service providers, helping them stay ahead in the rapidly evolving industry," Molnar explains. "While tools are essential, a comprehensive, data-driven approach is critical for error-free operations and delivering optimal viewer experiences."
