More Brits to the Netherlands
More Brits to the Netherlands
Stricter British immigration laws cause fewer students from outside the European Union to come to England to study. At the same time, British students have become keener on studying abroad themselves. As the second-most popular European study destination for international students, the Netherlands might begin to threaten England’s 1st place rank.
In the end of last year, Minister Theresa May announced she wanted to push back immigration from 196,000 immigrants in 2009 to ‘tens of thousands’ in the coming years. Two thirds of the immigrants enter England with a student visa. Research shows that as a result of the change in policy, 260,000 students less will come to England from the present until 2016.
Because of the decrease in income from tuition fees, visa fees, and the economic income foreign students bring, the British treasury will miss out on about 2.4 billion Pounds in the coming four years, the Ministry estimates.
Higher tuition fees - more Brits abroad
The number of British students enrolled for Dutch bachelor programmes, taught in English, has increased drastically compared to last year. Programmes in international business and management are amongst the most popular choices.
In recent articles published in The Independent, university directors fear a brain drain of about 200,000 young English people as per September. An important reason for moving is the cuts in British education. Currently yearly tuition fees amount to a maximum of € 3,750. As from 2012, universities are allowed to raise this sum to a maximum of € 9,900.
Recent research shows that about 10 percent of all British students will not pay more than € 7,750 to study in a university. This goes for students from both the lower and higher socio-economic classes. Furthermore, Great Britain is dealing with a shortage of study places.
Up until now, British students have never been keen on studying abroad. On an international scale, Great Britain is ranked second when it comes to incoming students, yet 22nd in students going abroad.
